Family Law – Locating Birth Parents After Adoption
Published 28 November 2018
We recently took instructions from a client who wished to locate his birth parents. The client, who now lives abroad, was born in Northern Ireland during the 1960s and was adopted shortly after birth. The client felt the time was right to begin investigations into his lineage and required a legal team in the jurisdiction to undertake the work.
The client contacted Karen Edwards in MKB Law’s Family Law team to assist him with this matter. Karen and her team vowed to leave no stone unturned in this matter whilst respecting the highly confidential nature of the circumstances.
The client had in his possession basic details relating to his adoption, including his original birth name. With this information, MKB Law obtained the adoption files on behalf of our client from the local Trust and the Guardian Ad Litem Agency.
After further investigations, Karen and her team successfully located the client’s birth mother. Then, upon request of our client, we reached out to her regarding this matter. This was conducted with full discretion and all correspondence between the parties omitted any identifying details until it was ascertained that both parties were happy to move forward.
Indeed, both our client and the lady identified as his birth mother were highly responsive to the situation. This resulted in our client visiting Northern Ireland only a few weeks later to meet in person with his birth mother.
At MKB Law we offer a complete service for clients concerning all Family Law related matters. Our highly experienced team of solicitors will endeavor to take a professional, practical and caring approach to ensure that such issues are dealt with as quickly and sensitively as possible.
